Détails du Lot
Robert Fuqua (American, 1905-1959) Revolt of the Robots, Fantastic Adventures pulp magazine cover, May 1939 Gouache on board 15-1/2 x 11-1/2 inches (39.4 x 29.2 cm) (sight) Not signed The Frank Collection of Science Fiction & Fantasy Art Robert Fuqua is the name used by Joseph Wirt Tillitson in his prolific and genre-defining pulp career working for titles like Amazing Stories, Fantastic Adventures, Imagination, and Other Worlds. His melodramatic, colorful work is among the most eye-catching art to appear on magazine covers from the Golden Age of Science Fiction. Revolt of the Robots, which appeared on the cover of the first issue of Fantastic Adventures in May 1939, perfectly captures the spirit of the Ziff-Davis pulp, which sought to combine sci-fi and fantasy and develop a lighter-hearted companion to the already popular Amazing Stories. This painting, illustrating the important Arthur Tofte story of the same name, helped to set the tone for this significant title and is an important and stunning piece of pulp history.
