Robert Fuqua (American, 1905-1959) The Mad Robot, Amazing Stories pulp magazine cover, January 1944 Gouache on board 19-1/2 x 13-3/4 inches (49.5 x 34.9 cm) (sight) Not signed The Frank Collection of Science Fiction & Fantasy Art PROVENANCE: Malcolm Willits, Pasadena, California; Christie's East, New York, October 31, 1992, lot 94; Acquired by the present owner from the above. Few artists could balance the primal fear that technology can evoke with the sense of possibility and heroism that were the heart of mid-20th century science fiction like Robert Fuqua. The Mad Robot, created as cover art for the January 1944 issue Amazing Stories, shows the battle between man and machine in dramatic glory. With lobster-like tentacles and a human brain beneath a clear dome, this fearsome robot is Robert Fuqua at his best. The present work appears as a color plate on page 39 of The Frank Collection: A Showcase of the World's Finest Fantastic Art by Jane Frank (Sterling Pub., 1999).
