Andrea Modica (American, b. 1960) Real Indians, (complete with 25 works), 2002 Gelatin silver prints, printed 2003 approximately 9-1/2 x 7-5/8 inches (24.1 x 19.4 cm) and the reverse (images) 14 x 11 inches and the reverse (sheets) Each signed, titled, and dated in pencil, verso. Text inserts, signed, dated, and editioned 6/25 in pencil on colophon. In 2002, Andrea Modica was commissioned by the American Indian College Fund to photograph people who were closely associated with the 32 tribal colleges for Native Americans in 12 western states. The purpose was to celebrate the diversity of Native American peoples and to challenge assumptions and prejudices about these extraordinarily rich cultures. The images that followed are the result of eight months of intensive work by Modica, who spent the time meeting her subjects and getting to know them. Many of the places where the pictures were taken were imbued with the presence of Native Americans who had been there for many generations. The portraits themselves are a fascinating glimpse into how modern times have shaped Native Americans and their way of life.
