Détails du Lot
Jacob de Wit (Dutch, 1695-1754) Allegory of autumn Grey ink and grey wash heightened with white on paper 8-3/4 x 5 inches (22.2 x 12.7 cm) (sheet) Property from the William A. Glaser Collection PROVENANCE: Christie's, New York, January 7, 1981, lot 50; Acquired by the present owner from the above. According to the collector's handwritten notes, Professor Egbert Haverkamp-Begemann examined the drawing in person on August 6, 1985, and opined that the work was undoubtedly by de Wit. This sketch relates to the artist's Allegory of the Four Seasons - Autumn, an oil on canvas in grisaille executed between 1751 and 1752, now in the Staatliche Museen, Kassel. The Kassel oil varies somewhat in relation to the present work, though several elements in the preparatory sketch remain, namely, the Dionysiac symbols throughout: the pinecone-headed staff, and a mischievous putto reaching for the god's ivy-crowned bust set atop a plinth in the back at center.
