A Russian Porcelain Ice Pail or Cache Pot Imperial Porcelain Factory, Period of Nicholas I (1825-1855), circa 1840 5-5/8 x 7-3/4 x 6-1/2 inches (14.3 x 19.7 x 16.5 cm) PROVENANCE: Bukowskis Auction Stockholm, Sweden, June 6, 2013, lot 25; John Atzbach Antiques, Bellevue, Washington; The Kathleen Durdin Collection of Russian Decorative Arts, Tampa, Florida. This rare ice pail or cache-pot in the Moorish taste may have been designed to be used in one of the Moorish style rooms which were beginning to become popular in the mid-19th century. Grand Duke Nicholas Nikolaevich the Elder had one in his famed "Nikolaevsky" palace in St. Petersburg, built by the architect Andreas Stackensneider (1802-1865).
