Détails du Lot
Robert Robinson (American, 1886-1952) A Close Call (Ford vs. Chevy), Motor magazine cover, August 1928 Oil on canvas 23-3/4 x 17-5/8 inches (60.3 x 44.8 cm) Signed lower left: Robert Robinson PROVENANCE: Previously from the Collection of Charles Martignette. The American identity is bound up in many things—a love of baseball and automobiles being two of the most prominent. In Robert Robinson's August 1928 cover art for Motor magazine, we see both of these loves celebrated, and the competition between the heavyweight corporate titans Ford and Chevrolet that drove economic development in the early motor age depicted as a somewhat friendly game. Robinson was fascinated by early motor cars and the profound changes they represented, and this personification of them as beacons of the American character is masterful. The work is as exuberant and as colorful as a sunny day at the ballpark and a powerfully thoughtful take on its cultural moment. The work is accompanied by the August 1928 issue of Motor magazine.
