Atelier Ramos, St. Joan, Spain; Maggorie Gallery of Art, Bologna Spain; Bernarducci-Meisel Gallery, New York; Louis K. Meisel Gallery, New York.
Mel Ramos (American, 1935-2018) The Transfiguration of Galatea #3, 2000 Oil on linen 32 x 21 inches (81.3 x 53.3 cm) Signed and dated on reverse Property from the Louis and Susan Meisel Collection PROVENANCE: Atelier Ramos, St. Joan, Spain; Maggorie Gallery of Art, Bologna Spain; Bernarducci-Meisel Gallery, New York; Louis K. Meisel Gallery, New York. The relationship between idealized female beauty and popular culture was the defining subject of Mel Ramos’s Pop Art career. In the Transfiguration of Galatea series, the artist explores the relationship between subject/object, high/low culture, and history/modernity through the classical Greek myth. In the myth, the sea nymph Galatea is turned into a sculpture by goddess Aphrodite in response to the prayers of the sculptor Pygmalion. Depicting Galatea as a late 20th century California dream girl being turned to stone in a pose evoking Sandro Botticelli’s The Birth of Venus, the work powerfully encapsulates Ramos’s signature themes. Unlined. One small spot on center left near figure, does not affect figure. Framed Dimensions 33 X 22.5 Inches
