During his 15 years with the gallery (he dies prematurely aged 49), he exhibited all the major fine art photographers of the day, helping expand the audience for their work, and generally establishing the market for the photographic print as a collectible art object. In 1971, with Daniel Burley, Witkin founded Witkin-Burley Ltd., publishers of fine limited-edition print folios by Edward Weston, Jerry Uelsmann and many other photographers shown in the gallery. The spirit in which he worked was reflected in his 57th Street gallery, a spacious, relaxed place of comfortable couches, books and collectibles that had nothing to do with photography.
