Island of Lost Souls was a shocker in 1932 and it's a shocker today. Based on the story, The Island of Dr. Moreau, by H.G. Wells, even Wells couldn't stomach the film version, and it was banned from viewing after the Hays Code was enforced in 1934. Like a true suspense film, it instilled fear in the audience for what it didn't show, but implied. Charles Laughton plays Dr. Moreau, an evil scientist who has developed a system of fast-tracking evolution, turning animals into humans. The atmospheric cinematography and stellar performances by Laughton, Bela Lugosi, and "Panther Woman" Kathleen Burke make this one of Paramount's classics of horror. So offensive was the film that it was not seen for decades; only since the 1970s have audiences been able to view it
