Ilse Bing (German/American, 1899-1998) Barber Shop, 1936 Gelatin silver print, printed later 13-1/4 x 9-1/4 inches (33.7 x 23.5 cm) (image) 14 x 11 inches (sheet) Signed in ink, verso. PROVENANCE: The artist; Abe Frajndlich, acquired from the above, circa 1994. This image was made by Ilse when she came to New York in preparation for her important exhibition at the Julien Levy Gallery the following year, 1937. The Gallery had started to exhibit her photographs as early as 1932. This was another example of Ilse giving me the gift of time travel through her work–the days when a shave at a barber shop was available for 5 cents. It was truly a different moment in our history.
