Hill & Saunders were Wilde's habitual photographs while at Oxford – he sat for them at least five times in 1875-6, in at least one other (dated March 1875) wearing the same loud check suit as in this image. The present portrait is dated by Merlin Holland in The Wilde Album (p.48) to 3 April 1876
