Vaughn Spann (b. 1992) Untitled (Golden Gates), 2021 Mixed media and polymer paint on panel 60 x 48 inches (152.4 x 121.9 cm) Signed, titled, and dated on the reverse: Vaughn Spann / 2021 / "Untitled (Golden Gates)" PROVENANCE: The artist; Private collection, New York, acquired from the above. The X is a recurring motif in Vaughn Spann's abstract paintings. His approach recalls Jasper Johns's treatment of flags and targets as images whose recognizable forms invite closer attention to the painted surface. For Spann the X also has a personal significance. Present in his Marked Man series since 2018 it recalls the position of his body during a police stop and search. The symbol also remains open to other associations as a mark of cancellation or a sign used to identify a place. In Untitled (Golden Gates) from 2021 a pale golden X stretches across a densely worked field of color. Its broad arms widen toward the corners and meet near the center of the panel. Flecks of orange and turquoise run through the form while deeper blue passages punctuate the surrounding surface. From a distance the X stands out clearly. Up close its edges soften as flecks of shared color weave the form into the surrounding surface. Layers of paint give the surface a pronounced texture with raised marks interrupting the sweep of the X. The repeated X also allows Spann to consider individuality within a shared experience. Each painting retains the same recognizable form but develops its own character through differences in color and surface. Spann received his MFA from Yale School of Art in 2018. His work is held in public collections including the Brooklyn Museum and the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden as well as the Pérez Art Museum Miami.
