Jamie Nares (b. 1953) Old Gold, 2015 Oil on linen 37 x 126 inches (94.0 x 320.0 cm) Signed, titled, and dated on the reverse: Nares / Old Gold / 2015 PROVENANCE: Paul Kasmin Gallery, New York; Private collection, Toronto. Jamie Nares's work across painting and film reflects a sustained interest in movement and the passage of time. Roy Lichtenstein's brushstroke paintings provided an important precedent by making the painted gesture a subject in its own right. Nares brings a physical immediacy to that idea. Using brushes she designs and makes herself she creates sweeping marks that record the changing direction and pressure of a gesture. The resulting paintings preserve the smallest traces of that movement even as they expand to an architectural scale. In Old Gold from 2015 a broad golden stroke curls and folds across a dark ground. Fine lines left by the brush follow each turn and give the paint the appearance of gathered silk. Pale passages open into loose strands while deeper ochre tones collect within the rounded forms. Small splashes break away from the edges and interrupt the otherwise continuous sweep. The gold seems suspended against the darkness with a weight and volume that change along its length. Spanning more than ten feet the canvas allows the gesture to unfold through a succession of turns. The eye follows its course almost as it might follow a moving image. The brush has left the surface but its path remains visible through every loop and fine strand of paint. Nares has been the subject of solo exhibitions at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Milwaukee Art Museum. Her work is held in major public collections including the Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art.
