Born in Canadian, Texas, Maurice Bernson studied art under Isabel Robinson at West Texas State College and the Palo Duro School of Art, earning early recognition with a first prize at the 1941 Tri-State Fair in Amarillo before World War II. After the war, he pursued further studies at art schools in Florida and completed his academic training at Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan.
