Détails du Lot
Frederic Kimball Mizen (American, 1888-1964) Lake Waco, 1958 Oil on canvas 40 x 64 inches (101.6 x 162.6 cm) Signed, dated, and titled lower right: Lake Waco 1958 / Frederic Mizen PROVENANCE: Private collection, Hurst, Texas. Frederic Kimball Mizen was a prominent American artist whose ties to the Southwest and years in Texas left a lasting mark on the region's art scene. Born in Chicago, he rose to fame as a commercial illustrator, creating iconic work for Coca-Cola, the Santa Fe Railroad, and top automobile companies. He frequently traveled to Arizona and New Mexico, painting vivid scenes of Native American life and desert landscapes. In 1952, Mizen moved to Waco to lead the art department at Baylor University, where he introduced commercial and practical art into the curriculum. During his time in Texas, he earned major portrait commissions and exhibited widely across the state. A committed traditionalist, Mizen was known for his detailed realism and dedication to representational art. Texans remember him as both a skilled painter and an influential educator. We are proud to present two monumentally scaled landscape paintings by Mizen, created during his tenure in Waco, Texas. Painted at a time when Mizen was shaping the next generation of Texas artists, these pieces stand as lasting tributes to his technical mastery and deep connection to the Texas landscape. Lake Waco and Lover's Leap on the ‘Bosque' are significant contributions to the legacy of Texas and a unique opportunity for collectors of Southwestern art.
