A Monumental James Dixon & Sons Victorian Silver-Plated Centerpiece Plateau, Sheffield, England, late 19th century Marks: JD&S, PNS 8-1/2 x 26 x 26 inches (21.6 x 66.0 x 66.0 cm) The plateau, of rare and extremely large size, having 21.5 inch diameter well lined with rope border, below to bellflower trim, apron with each cardinal corner embellished with male fantasy mask between floral swags and Adam-style medallions, below to conforming rope border at lower waist, apron trimmed below in wavy border, all raised on four detailed hairy paw and acanthus spray feet. An identical cake stand was used at the wedding of Prince Edward, Duke of Kent and Katharine, Duchess of Kent, daughter of Sir William Worsley 4th Baronet of Hovingham Hall, Yorkshire. The wedding cake reportedly weighed 180 pounds and was some 5 feet tall. Of grand scale, in ready to place condition; sits flush on even surface, two light dimples to well and scattered degrees of utensil marks to serving surface, small 1-inch section of rope border missing to lower apron, retains original wooden liner to underside, some residual tarnish to deeper crevices, presenting well.
