Détails du Lot
Workshop of Giovanni Battista Tiepolo (Italian, 1696-1770) The Virgin and Child Chalk on paper 9 x 5-7/8 inches (22.9 x 14.9 cm) (sheet) Property from the William A. Glaser Collection PROVENANCE: Sotheby's, New York, January 13, 1989, lot 281 (as Circle of Giovanni Battista Tiepolo); Acquired by the present owner from the above. LITERATURE: B. Aikema, et al, Giambattista Tiepolo nel Terzo Centenario della Nascita, Venice, 1998, p. 14, no. 6, illustrated. Tiepolo scholar Dr. Bernard Aikema notes in a May 12, 1989 letter that the present drawing belongs to a group of chalk copies executed in the artist's workshop, likely for education purposes rather than copied for sale. He notes that Tiepolo had many pupils in his early years capable of producing such meticulous work, preventing identification of the exact hand behind this particular sheet.
