Frantisek Drtikol (Czech, 1883-1961) Fan Dancer, 1930 Blue toned carbon print 4-1/2 x 6-1/4 inches (11.4 x 15.9 cm) (image/sheet) Embossed with photographer's blindstamp in the image. The Collection of Hal Gould, Camera Obscura Gallery, Denver. Frantisek Drtikol stopped using live models for his photographs around 1930, preferring to create tableaux of arranged cut-out or carved nude figures instead. Some of these pictures were designed to represent principles of Buddhism, a religion that Drtikol studied seriously. The fan-shaped arrangement of this figure may refer to Taoist symbolism, in which the fan is one of the Eight Precious Things. (The J. P.
