Nancy Grossman (b. 1940) Seated Figure, 1976 Mixed media collage on paper 47-3/4 x 41-3/4 inches (121.3 x 106.0 cm) (sight) Signed and dated lower left: N. Grossman '76 PROVENANCE: Cordier & Ekstrom, Inc., New York; Doyle, New York, April 4, 2001, lot 40 (as Han Figure Seated); Private collection, New Jersey. The collage works that Nancy Grossman created during the mid-1970s hold a distinctive place within her oeuvre, expanding upon her recurring themes of identity, autonomy, and self-expression. Known primarily for her provocative leather-wrapped head sculptures, which explore constraints on individual freedom, Grossman turned to collage as a medium to further delve into similar subjects while experimenting with new forms of visual language. By layering images from various sources, Grossman was able to piece together complex, often surreal portraits that emphasize the layered, constructed nature of identity. Presents well. Some undulation to paper elements, consistent with use of employed media. Otherwise, there appear to be no major condition issues affecting the work. Sheet is mounted and framed under acrylic. Not examined out of frame due to size. Framed Dimensions 48.75 X 43 Inches
