LITERATURE: Tony Shafrazi Gallery, The Last Decade, American Artists of the 80s, exhibition catalogue, New York, 1990, pp. 82-83, 136, illustrated; Jablonka Gallery, Carroll Dunham: Paintings and Drawings, exhibition catalogue, Cologne, 1991, n.p., illustrated. In his paintings from the late 1980s, Carroll Dunham established a bold, recognizable visual language characterized by recurring abstract symbols, forms, and motifs that delved into themes of aggression, sexuality, and the subconscious. During this period, Dunham began incorporating biomorphic shapes, bulbous forms, and cartoonish, yet vaguely menacing structures. These symbols reflect his interest in exploring the intersection of the organic and the mechanical, creating visual tension that raises questions about the primal and the constructed aspects of human nature.
