xippas art contemporain, Geneva, Switzerland; Private collection, Houston, Texas, acquired from the above, 2013.
Peter Halley (b. 1953) The Way Back, 2011 Acrylic, Day-Glo acrylic, and Roll-A-Tex on canvas 72-1/2 x 79 inches (184.2 x 200.7 cm) Signed and dated on reverse: 2011 / Peter Halley PROVENANCE: Xippas Art Contemporain, Geneva, Switzerland; Private collection, Houston, Texas, acquired from the above, 2013. Peter Halley's artwork from 2011 stands out for its intricate compositions and unique approach to surfaces, which reflect his ongoing exploration of modern social structures, technology, and confinement. Known for his geometric forms and vibrant, industrial color palette, Halley's works from this period continue his long-standing investigation into the structures of society—structures that often feel restricting and isolating. Through his strategic compositions and textured surfaces, Halley invites viewers to consider the paradox of connection and isolation in the digital age. Halley's compositions are dominated by repetitive, geometric shapes that evoke architectural forms, such as cells and conduits, symbolizing the networks and compartments of urban and digital spaces. These shapes, meticulously organized within a confined visual space, mirror the rigid structures of modern life, where everything from social interactions to work is increasingly mediated through technology and institutional frameworks. The surfaces of Halley's 2011 works are also of particular importance, as they combine the sleekness of industrial materials with a deliberate use of texture. Halley frequently uses Day-Glo paint and Roll-A-Tex, a material that gives his work a granular, stucco-like texture. These materials create a tactile quality that contrasts with the flatness of traditional painting, adding a physicality that pulls viewers into the work.
