Détails du Lot
A Green Duan Stone Inset Huanghuali Kangzhuo Low Table, 17th/18th century 12 x 41 x 27 inches (30.5 x 104.1 x 68.6 cm) Chinese furniture has long been admired for its lustrous materials, purity of line, and artful joinery, especially by those with a discerning and educated eye. Among all types of wood, Huanghuali (Dalbergia odorifera) is the rarest and most prized for its beautiful color, intricate grains, and remarkable durability. This Kangzhuo low table, crafted from Huanghuali harvested in Hainan, China, is inset with a large pane of green Duan stone from Guangdong. The table features a rectangular shape with "water-stopping" edges above a narrow waist. The beaded aprons are adorned with a pair of confronting dragons, and the corners are embellished with vivid and fierce lion masks. The four cabriole legs, resting on ball and claw feet, not only add elegance to the design but also demonstrate the lavish use of material, as they require larger pieces of wood than straight legs. Kangzhuo tables are traditionally used atop couches, providing a surface for leisure items such as teacups and incense burners while one rests. This table comes from the Estate of Princess Maria Romanoff, who acquired it from Sotheby's, likely in the 1980s. It was used as a coffee table in her office. In overall very good condition, with the color of huanghuali wood stands out. A diagonal crack to the duan stone on the table top. some wear and nicks to corners and edges, consistent with age and use. With a hardwood clamp beneath the stone, and possible other hardwood elements. Otherwise, no other visible condition issues.
