Morton Künstler (American, b. 1931) While the Enemy Rests, 1997 Oil on canvas 24 x 38 inches (61.0 x 96.5 cm) Signed and dated lower right: MKünstler 97 While the Enemy Rests by Mort Künstler is a compelling depiction Colonel John S. Mosby of the Confederacy surveying Union troop movements from Paris Mountain in Northern Virginia on December 1, 1864. In Künstler's own words, "Placing the time at sunset gave me dramatic lighting, as well as enabling me to show the campfires glowing. It also gave me the opportunity to show two of the three lakes in the valley dramatically reflecting the orange glow of the sun."
