Willy Maywald (German, 1907-1985) Sculpture by Maillol from the Collection of Dina Vierny (2 works), circa 1950 Gelatin silver prints 10-3/8 x 9-3/8 inches (26.3 x 23.7 cm), and 12 x 9-1/2 inches (30.5 x 24.1 cm) (image/sheet) Each titled and with the photographer's reproduction limitation studio stamp, verso. Born Dina Aibinder into a Jewish family in Bessarabia (now Moldova), Dina Vierny (1919-2009) moved to France with her family during her childhood. Aged 15, she became sculptor Aristide Maillol's muse until his death in 1944 and also posed for Henri Matisse, Raoul Dufy and Pierre Bonnard. After working for the resistance during the Second World War, Vierny opened a gallery in Paris in 1947. In 1964, she donated 18 sculptures by Maillol for installation in the Jardin des Tuileries and founded the Maillol Museum in 1995. Each a neutral toned print on glossy, ferrotyped, mid-weight paper, trimmed to edges. Small condition issues through the pair including handling creases, fissures, edge chips, wear to edges and corners; one with small paper loss, upper right hand corner. Sold unmatted and unframed.
