Woldemar Friedrich accompanied Duke Ernst Günther of Schleswig-Holstein on a trip to India in 1887/88. In 1890, he published the studies and sketches he made there in the book "Sechs Monate Indien. Jagd- und Reisebilder" ('Six months in India. Hunting and travel depictions'). It may be assumed that the present sketch is intended to be seen in this context.
