Carl Gussow became a professor at the Grand Ducal Baden School of Art in Karlsruhe at the age of 27 and later moved to the Royal Academy of Arts in Berlin until 1880. He was a teacher of Max Klinger and Carl von Marr, among others. Carl Gussow was particularly successful as a naturalistic genre painter and portraitist. The present work is a successful mixture of both. The young woman, whose blissful facial expression reflects what she sees, is not only the model in the narrative picture. She herself is the portraited person.
