Joseph Christian Leyendecker (American, 1874-1951) Cafe Scene, circa 1897 Mixed media on paper 14 x 22 inches (35.6 x 55.9 cm) (sight) Signed with artist's monogram: JCL PROVENANCE: Previously from the Collection of Keith Stanley, Professor Emeritus of Classical Studies at Duke University. This lively Parisian café scene reflects the artistic lessons J. C. Leyendecker absorbed while studying at the Académie Julian from 1895 to 1897. His academic training is evident in the confidently constructed figures, while the elevated viewpoint, cropped foreground patrons, and overlapping forms convey the immediacy of modern city life adding that touch of Parisian Glamour. Bold contours, rhythmic hatching, and a restrained palette reveal the influence of contemporary French poster design. The work captures Belle Époque Paris while anticipating the dynamic compositions and commanding figures that would define Leyendecker's later American career.
