- Drewes studied under Paul Klee, Johannes Itten and Oskar Schlemmer at the Bauhaus in Weimar in 1921 and 1922. - In 1930, he emigrated to the United States, where he established contact with, among others, Wassily Kandinsky, who helped him to stage his first solo exhibitions. - In 1937, Drewes co-founded the American Abstract Artists. - Starting in 1946, he taught at the School of Fine Arts at Washington University in St. Louis. - Drewes' paintings from the 1940s are among the most sought-after works on the international auction market (source: artprice.com). - In 2021/22, the Academy Art Museum in Easton, Maryland, presented a comprehensive retrospective of the artist's work.
