Referring to the still lifes of the late 1930s and 1940s, Christiane Remm wrote: “It is precisely from the uncompromising simplicity of the depiction that these works derive their inner monumentality and dignity.” (quoted from: Christiane Remm, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, Aquarelle, Berlin 2011, p. 62).
• In his later creative period, Schmidt-Rottluff focused increasingly on his immediate surroundings; still lifes became his central motifs.
• Time and again, he captured the formal beauty of objects and revealed his personal dialog with his subjects.
• Watercolor plays a central role in Schmidt-Rottluff’s work: from the “Brücke” years through to his final creative period in the 1970s, watercolor dominates his oeuvre.
The work is registered in teh archivwe of the Karl and Emy Schmidt-Rottluff Foundation. We are grateful for the kind support in cataloging this lot.
