Détails du Lot
Oil on cardboard , rebacked with canvas. With the estate stamp, a hardly legible handwritten number and the partly stamped, partly handwritten confirmation by Lolo von Lenbach dated February 19, 1937 on the reverse of the canvas. 53.5 x 64.9 cm.
- Franz von Lenbach rose to become the painter prince of the Munich high society in the late 19th century thanks to his portraits. - In this portrait, Lenbach captured his eldest daughter Marion (1892-1947) and the American Marion Alice Bateman-Hanbury (née Graham, widowed Knapp), later Baroness Bateman. In July 1904, she married William Spencer Bateman-Hanbury, the third Baron Bateman (1856-1931). - The frontal view of the subjects, strong contrasts between light and dark, and a sophisticated technique involving delicate, glazed layers of paint allow the artist to create an enigmatic atmosphere. - Franz von Lenbach's portraits of his daughter Marion are part of important museum collections, including the Städtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus, Munich, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
Artist's estate, Munich (with the estate stamp on the reverse and the handwritten estate number). Private collection, South Germany. Private collection, South Germany (inherited from the above)
Captivating depiction with a beautiful overall impression. Isolated minor abrasions. A slightly more pronounced vertical abrasion to the right of the figure. Slight abrasions at the top of the picture due to framing, as well as minor paint and material losses. Minor professional retouching, e.g. on the right in the dark background, visible under UV light. A slightly more extensive overpainting in the upper left edge of the picture. The condition report was compiled in daylight and a UV light source and to the best of our knowledge and belief.
