Obwohl religiöse Themen in Andy Warhols Werk nicht im Vordergrund stehen, war der Künstler gläubiger Katholik und setzte sich wiederholt mit christlicher Ikonographie auseinander. Anfang der 1980er-Jahre griff er verstärkt Motive der Renaissance auf. Das Portfolio „Saint Apollonia“ basiert auf einem Tafelbild aus dem 15. Jahrhundert, das der Werkstatt Piero della Francescas zugeschrieben wird und sich heute in der National Gallery of Art in Washington befindet.

Die Heilige Apollonia, Schutzpatronin der Zahnheilkunde, ist an ihrem traditionellen Attribut, einer Zange mit Zahn, zu erkennen. Warhol übernimmt die Komposition des Vorbilds nahezu unverändert und überträgt sogar das Craquelé des historischen Gemäldes in den Druck. Dadurch erhalten die Blätter eine bewusst gealterte, malerische Oberflächenwirkung.

Although religious subjects do not occupy a prominent place in Andy Warhol’s oeuvre, the artist was a devout Catholic and repeatedly engaged with Christian iconography. In the early 1980s, he increasingly turned to motifs from the Renaissance. The portfolio Saint Apollonia is based on a 15th-century panel painting attributed to Piero della Francesca, now held at the National Gallery of Art, Washington.
