The paper work ‘Seated Nude in a Tub’ (1928) by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, executed in watercolour and black ink, depicts a female nude in a highly simplified, expressive form. Kirchner outlines the body with a few energetic lines, whilst delicate shades of pink and turquoise accentuate individual areas and create a striking contrast to the dominant black outline.

The sheet belongs to Kirchner’s late Davos period, which emerged from the early 1920s onwards under the influence of his retreat to the Swiss Alps. During this phase, his visual language becomes more condensed: the line gains autonomy, becomes more rhythmic and often almost symbolic, whilst colour is applied purposefully and in broad strokes. At the same time, the depiction of the body is increasingly linked to an intensified expression of inner states. The works of this period strike a balance between spontaneous gesture and compositional control – ‘Seated Nude in a Tub’ is a striking example of this.
