Détails du Lot
Brush and India ink and watercolor. Signed (in ligature) and dated lower right. On wove paper. 60.7 x 48 cm. , the full sheet. [CH].

• Watercolors from this period are characterized by vital graphic elements that lend them an extraordinary presence.
• With firm contours, reduced colors, and subtle cold-warm contrasts, Pechstein creates a dense and opulent composition from the striking ornamental patterns of the curtain, the small vase, and the folded turquoise-green fabric.
• A skillful play of light and shadow, the juxtaposition of fore- and background, and the focus on only three motif components, create a dramatic tension.
• Part of a private collection in the Rhineland for almost 100 years.
• The year this work was created, the Carnegie Institute in Pittsburgh, USA, honored Pechstein with a prize for a flower still life in oil paint.
Galerie Alex Vömel, Düsseldorf. Private collection, Rhineland (acquired from the above in the 1930s). In family ownership ever since
