Eugène Boudin, a friend of Claude Monet, is best known for his breezy marine paintings depicting vessels on the water near ports and fishing villages in Normandy, as well as seaside resorts such as Deauville and Trouville. Less familiar, however, are the much rarer landscapes from his late career, painted away from the coast in the French countryside at Oisème, a hamlet just northeast of Chartres, between 1891 and 1893. In the present work, executed en plein air at a farm near Oisème, Boudin was at the height of his powers. The scene offers an exquisite evocation of wind and sunlight. His network of small, rapid brushstrokes—applied wet-in-wet, sometimes parallel and at other times crisscrossing—conveys the sensation of wind stirring the grass and trees; in places, his technique creates a remarkable, almost dizzying sense of movement. Boudin's renowned gift for painting skies is on full display in this composition. HID12401132022 © 2026 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved www.HA.com/TexasAuctioneerLicenseNotice
