George Petty (American, 1894-1975) "I'm not posing for that account any longer..," Esquire interior, December 1938 Watercolor on board with collage 16-1/2 x 12-1/8 inches (41.9 x 30.8 cm) Signed center right: PETTY PROVENANCE: The artist; Mitchell Heinemann, Vice-President of Jantzen Knitting Mills, acquired from the above; By descent to the present owner. This work is a published Esquired Petty Girl with the caption: "I'm not posing for that account any longer. It seems I took the consumer's mind entirely off the product." The work was then reused with the application of hand-painted collage elements by George Petty for Jantzen when they expanded into lingerie. The present work appears on page 402 of The Art of Pin-Up by Dian Hanson with Louis K. Meisel and Sarahjane Blum (Taschen, 2014). The work is accompanied by a Petty Girl offset lithograph signed and dedicated to Mitch Heinemann, Executive Vice President, and number one Salesman for Jantzen Swimsuit Company. Hand painted collaged elements are figure's under garments; cut areas of board have slight lift around figure; scattered foxing and spots of discoloration. Toning to board; with scattered vestiges of adhesive.
