Attributed to Gil Elvgren (American, 1914-1980) Woman in White Stepping Out, circa 1953 Oil on canvas 30 x 24 inches (76.2 x 61.0 cm) Not signed Property from the Louis and Susan Meisel Collection Woman in White Stepping Out is a stunning work that showcases a classic period beauty. It features a pose nearly identical to the published Gil Elvgren Brown & Bigelow calendar Stepping Out featuring model Myrna Hansen and appears to also show the Miss USA. The work comes directly from the collection of Louis K. Meisel, co-author of Gil Elvgren: All His Glamorous American Pin-Ups (Taschen, 1999) and an undisputed expert in the artist. It is thought by Meisel and others that this was most likely created as advertising rather than calendar art, though it seems to never have been published. Unlined. Minor losses along extreme edges. Faint stretcher bar lines, visible primarily under raking light. 7 inch vertical crack in lower center of work extending into figure's dress. Undulations with subsequent cracking to upper right corner and undulations to lower left, observed primarily under raking light. Accompanied by restoration report from Julius Lowy Frame & Restoring Company and is available upon request.
