Seymour Fogel (American, 1911-1984) Untitled, 1978 Mixed media 72 x 24 x 5-1/2 inches (182.9 x 61.0 x 14.0 cm) (overall) Signed: Fogel, '78 PROVENANCE: The artist; Estate of the above; Larry and Trish Heichel Collection of Seymour Fogel; Portico New York, Inc., New York. EXHIBITED: Baker Schorr Gallery, Midland, Texas, "Seymour Fogel: Texas Modernist," January 26 - March 2, 2023. Seymour Fogel was born in New York City in 1921. He studied at the National Academy of Design and the Art Students League under George Brandt Bridgman and Leon Kroll. After finding a mentor in famed muralist Diego Rivera, he gained great success as a WPA muralist in his own right. His work was shown at the Whitney Museum of American Art eight times in the 1940s and 1950s and was included in major exhibitions at the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA). After WWII he accepted a teaching position at the University of Texas, Austin and became a leading member of the Texas Modernist Movement. In the mid-1950s, Fogel experienced what amounted to an artistic epiphany. He began to experiment with the notion of "channeling" art or letting art paint itself through him with minimal intellectual guidance or direction. Art for Fogel had become an atavistic, primal experience. The resulting abstract expressionist works reveal a wide variety of moods and rhythms, from gauzy and indistinct to bold, smoldering, and brash. During this time, he experimented in various mediums, including painting, drawing, sculpture, and collage. We are very pleased to be offering four excellent, diverse works this period, a wonderful opportunity for collectors of Texas Modernism. HID12401132022 © 2024 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved
