Sir Frank Brangwyn (British, 1867-1956) The Net, Four Elements mural study, 1915 Gouache on board 19-3/4 x 9-3/4 inches (50.2 x 24.8 cm) Not signed The Estate of Everett Raymond Kinstler The present work was completed as a study for The Net in a series of murals of the Four Elements by Frank Brangwyn as a commission for the Panama-Pacific International Exposition of 1915 in San Francisco. A series of eight panels were completed by Brangwyn and hung in the Court of Abundance fine art section of the fair. The Net is one of the two panels associated with the element of water in the series, the other titled The Fountain, both appearing softer in composition than the other three elements. The final panels measured 18 x 25 feet completed with arched tops, a design element seen in the upper region of the present work. Today, the final panels can be seen in the San Francisco War Memorial and Performing Arts Center in the Herbst Theatre. The work is accompanied by an interior tearsheet.
