Arthur Rackham (British, 1867-1939) The Three Norns Winding the Rope of Fate, Siegfried and the Twilight of the Gods book interior, 1911 Watercolor and ink on board 10-3/4 x 7-1/4 inches (27.3 x 18.4 cm) Not signed PROVENANCE: Previously from the Collection of Miss Nellie Ionides. EXHIBITED: Leicester Galleries, London, "Exhibition of Works by Arthur Rackham," 1911; The Fine Art Society, London, February 1971. Celebrated for bringing myths and legends to life, Arthur Rackham's illustrations for Siegfried and the Twilight of the Gods (Doubleday, 1911) by Richard Wagner are dramatic and haunting. This example, published on page 103, features the Three Norns, Urðr, Verðandi, and Skuld, female figures in Norse mythology who shape the destinies of gods and mortals. Here, these three are dramatically lit from behind (whether from the dawn of a new day or dusk of the last) and are shown sitting beneath Yggdrasil, the World Tree, where they are winding the rope of fate. Within Richard Wagner's Götterdämmerung, the Norns's prophecy is utilized as the prologue foreshadowing the destruction of Valhalla.
