- Early work from the group of the "Institution Paintings" created in the 1970s. - In rooms devoid of people and color, the artist uses a period from his own life as a motif. - He was awarded the Villa Massimo Prize in the year the work was created. - From 1991-2004 he was principal of the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. - His works are regularly exhibited at international art fairs and in museums, most recently at the Albertina in Vienna (Ben Willikens. Kälte - Räume) in 2022.
